Birth of a star
Just before New Years, I started strategizing.
I figured, “Cool, I’ll take an uncomfortable time out from the grind and think big picture.”
Figured I’d hit the ground running in January. Haha.
It took waaaay longer. And I’m so glad.
See, we all here have intense bias for action. The idea of sitting in ambiguity for weeks or months is unsettling. The lack of progress gnaws at us daily.
But sometimes that’s what we need.
The Warrior Poet as a brand started as one of several ideas as I was sitting at my desk in Agency.
Agency is what the kids and I called the townhouse I rented after my ex-wife and I separated many years ago.
My “office” was a corner of our living room.
I’d known for a long time that I wanted to do a podcast. Ever since listening to this guy named Tim Ferriss on my iPod in the mid-2000s. Before every middle-aged white dude and teen influencer had one. And before “podcast” ceased to mean audio through RSS and basically meant “people talking in a serial on Youtube.”
Anyhow, my brothers in the SEAL Teams and I weren’t what people think. Intense? Sure. But thoughtful, intellectual, and large-hearted.
The best warriors are students of warfare. So many of us were familiar with the bushido code of the samurai. That code—and the knightly customs of Europe—embraced this duality of aggression and, for lack of a better phrase, the softer side. I didn’t make up the “the warrior poet.” Those traditions did.
Plus, I’d written lots of poetry. So the name fit in more ways than one.
And here we are, 100 episodes (and change) in. I’ve had the chance to interview loads of cool guests and to share my (sometimes crazy) ideas with the world. With 4.8 and 4.9 stars respectively on Apple and Spotify.
(Feel free to get me closer to 5 stars by dropping a quick rating now 😉 )
Death of an icon
As I started doing consulting, speaking, and (eventually) coaching, I needed a name and a for-realz work email. So I just extended what I already had.
But the name no longer serves its purpose.
(If anyone wants to talk the marketing details here, I’ve learned a lot going through this! Shoot me a note.)
Like a Phoenix: We are Inevitable.
“Dad, if I could name our dance team. I’d call us The Phoenix.” —my daughter
I loved that. At the same time, I think the phoenix is WAY overwrought in pop culture.
But here it fits. The Warrior Poet isn’t actually dead. He’ll always be… me.
But the concept is now reborn.
Back to that long strategy session. We’re now, 4 months in (!)—and it’s finally coming to a close.
This newsletter and my company are now called Inevitable.
Because if we put in the right mindset, habits, and teams, success becomes inevitable.
That’s what we did in the SEAL Teams.
That’s what the best sports teams do.
That’s what surgeons do.
And tech.
As Bill Walsh said, “The score takes care of itself.”
But you need to believe you can make it happen.
Take absolute ownership.
My mantra: “Full agency.”
Keep your eyes peeled
So look out for the first edition of Inevitable, coming to your inbox soon.
Same guy, same vibe—perhaps more focused.
And as for the podcast, exciting things are happening.
Can’t wait to share soon.
❤️ Andrew
